Getting started

Getting Raree

Raree is on the App Store for iPhone and Apple Vision Pro.

Installing it

  1. Find Raree on the App Store. On your iPhone or Apple Vision Pro, search for Raree, or use the button above.
  2. Download it and open it. Raree comes with worlds to try, and opening them is free.
  3. Open a portal. Viewing worlds shows how.

Someone sent you a world? Open the link on an iPhone: you don’t need to install Raree first.

Viewing worlds

Open a portal to a world on a wall or standing on the floor.

Opening a portal

  1. Find some space. About 2 meters (6 feet) from a wall, or with open floor ahead.
  2. Move your camera slowly. The mark turns blue when it finds a wall or the floor.
  3. Tap to place the portal.
  4. Walk up and look in. Step closer, lean, and look to the sides.

The controls hide once a portal is placed. Tap anywhere to bring them back.

Controls

  • Resize it. Pinch.
  • Move it. Drag with one finger.
  • Raise or lower it. Drag two fingers up or down.
  • Turn it. Twist two fingers, on a portal standing on the floor or a Wider world’s globe.

Selecting worlds

  • Recent worlds. Tap one along the bottom of the screen to open it.
  • Library. Tap Library to see all of your worlds.
  • Create. Tap Create to make a new one.
Where should I stand?

Just in front of the portal. Far to one side you’ll see where the world ends.

What if someone walks in front of it?

Choose how much of what’s around you mixes with the world using Mix with reality on the Raree page. See Settings for the levels and which iPhones can use them.

Can I look without the camera?

Yes. Press and hold a world in your library and choose View in 2D, then drag to look around. AR, at the bottom left, goes back to the camera.

Staying safe

Always be aware of the real world while using Raree.

  • Look up before you move.
  • Give yourself space. Away from streets, stairs, edges and anything to trip on.
  • Mind the people and pets around you.
  • Never on the move. Don’t use Raree while running, driving, jousting, or in other dangerous situations.
  • Take a break. Dizzy, queasy or tired eyes? Stop and rest.
  • Children need supervision. Children should only use Raree with a grown-up.
  • On Apple Vision Pro. A Wider world covers what’s around you: Step Out before you walk.

Making worlds

A world can be almost anywhere: somewhere real or somewhere impossible, at noon or by lantern light, true to life or painted like a storybook.

  • Imagine a world from a few words or a detailed description.
  • Reimagine your world from photos taken through the portal.
  • A Wider world surrounds you instead of filling a portal. Make one from words or photos, or from a world you’ve made from words.
  • Sketches let you preview and revise your world before finalizing it.

What’s in a world?

A world is a 3D place you look into through a portal.

Every Raree world has…

  • Real depth. Near things shift against far ones as you move.
  • Its own sound. Most worlds have a soundscape made for the place.
  • Effects. Rain, mist or dust, and other effects can be added to the world as needed.

Most worlds are seen through a portal that you look through. Wider worlds go all the way around you, so you can see the world from any angle.

What’s not in a world?

  • Worlds hold still. Rain falls and leaves sway, but people and animals stay still.
  • You can’t walk through it. Even a Wider world, all around you, is seen from one spot.

We designed Raree to give you great-quality worlds quickly. We’re working on adding these other features too, but they don’t yet meet our standards.

Imagine a world

Describe a world in a few words and watch as Raree creates it.

Creating a world

  1. Tap the Create button, then select Imagine a world.
  2. Describe the world you want to create. This can be a few words or a detailed description.
  3. Optionally pick a built-in look. You can also describe a custom look in the world description.
  4. You can also sketch it first. A sketch lets you preview and revise the world before fully creating it.
  5. Watch it arrive. Worlds typically take a bit over a minute to fully create.

No need to wait. After starting the creation process, you can switch to other worlds or even close Raree. Your finished world will be waiting in your library.

Sketch first?

Sketches let you preview and revise your world before finalizing it. It’s quicker and cheaper, a good way to check an idea. Like it? Tap Finalize World. The first few sketches come off the world’s price.

Can I start from an idea or say it out loud?

Tap one of the Ideas to start from it, or the dice for others. Tap the microphone to speak instead of typing.

Can I change a sketch?

Tap the pencil beside Finalize World. Revise changes this sketch and keeps what you like. Sketch again starts over. Each is another sketch, 2 tokens. If one fails, you keep the sketch you had and get its tokens back.

Where are my sketches?

In your library, on this device. Closing a sketch keeps it there; Remove sketch deletes it, and its tokens stay spent.

Reimagine your world

Photograph what’s in front of you through a portal and then reimagine it with Raree.

Make one

  1. Tap Create, then Reimagine your world.
  2. Stand the portal on the floor. Place it so you can see what you want to reimagine through it.
  3. Take the primary photo. Walk up to the portal to start capturing. Start by looking through the middle of the portal to capture the primary photo.
  4. Add additional photos. For better quality, capture other views of the world. Turn slowly: Raree takes a photo each time you pause on a dot. Tap Done when you’ve captured everything you want to reimagine.
  5. Say what it becomes. A few words, a look, or both.
  6. Make your world or sketch it first. It arrives in the portal you photographed through.

Good to know

How much does it change?

How much to change goes from a few touches to almost everything.

What if I move it?

It only lines up where you took the photos, so Raree asks before you move it. To put it back, tap Move, then the pin.

Can I reimagine it again?

Press and hold it in your library and choose Reimagine for a new world from the same photos, at a world’s price. Only on the device that took them.

What happens to my photos?

They’re sent to make your world, then deleted from our servers. A copy stays on your device for Reimagine.

Tips for creating worlds

Imagine a world

  • Say what you’d see from one spot. Something close, something across the way, something far off.
  • Say a little or a lot. “A misty forest” leaves the rest to Raree. To choose where things go, say so: “a red boat just left of center”.
  • Set the mood. “Eerie”, “peaceful” or “stormy”: the light, the colors and the effects follow it.
  • Name the light and the weather. “At golden hour” or “in morning mist” does more than a list of things.
  • Leave out people and writing. They come out oddly.
  • Make it all the way around you. Turn on Make It Wider, under the ideas. A world you’ve made can become Wider too, from its menu in your library.

Reimagine your world

  • Stand close and look through. Step up to the portal and aim through its middle at what you want.
  • Turn slowly and pause. Raree takes a photo each time you pause on something new. Turn in place: don’t walk.
  • Hold steady, in good light. A sharp photo makes a sharp world.
  • A Wider world. Stand where its middle will be, then turn all the way around. It appears where you stood.
  • Change it in a few words. “In deep winter” or “overgrown” works better than a long description.
  • Name the light and the weather. “At golden hour” or “in morning mist” relights it.

Your worlds

Library

All your worlds in one place: the ones you’ve made, the ones sent to you, and the ones that come with Raree.

Open a world

  1. Tap Library. At the bottom left.
  2. Tap a world.
  3. Place its portal. Aim at a wall or the floor and tap.

Manage a world

Press and hold a world in your library:

  • Info. Where it came from, and switches for its effects and sound.
  • Share link. Send it to anyone.
  • Rename. Give it a name of your own.
  • View in 2D. Look around it without the camera.
  • Reimagine. A new world from a photo world’s photos.
  • Delete world. It can’t be undone.
How do I find a world?

The tabs at the top show Mine or Shared. The magnifying glass searches by name or by a world’s words.

How do I delete worlds?

From a world’s menu or Info, or tap Select for several. It can’t be undone, and a shared world is deleted for everyone. The worlds that come with Raree stay.

Will my worlds move to a new device?

Yes, if you set it up from a backup of this one. Worlds aren’t synced through iCloud.

Can I get back a world that isn’t on this device?

Tap + in your library, then Worlds you’ve made, and tap one to bring it back.

How do I delete everything?

Delete Worlds and Data, at the bottom of Privacy on the Raree page, deletes your worlds and everything we keep about you, here and on our servers. Your tokens and subscription stay.

Sharing

Send a world as a link to anyone with an iPhone or Apple Vision Pro. It’s free, and on an iPhone they don’t need to install Raree first: the link opens the world.

  1. Open the world or find it in your library.
  2. Tap Share. At the top while a world is open, or in its menu in your library.
  3. Send the link.

A link shows the world and its name, not your words. A photo world shows what the photos show.

Worlds sent to you

A world you open from a link is kept in your library, under Shared.

Can I take a share back?

Delete the world. Its link stops working, and saved copies go the next time they’re opened.

What if I see something I shouldn’t?

Choose Report… in a shared world’s menu or Info, or on its web page. We look at every report, usually within a day.

Can I block someone?

Choose Block whoever shared it… in a shared world’s menu: their links no longer open for you.

Pricing

Pricing

Viewing and sharing worlds is free. Making them uses tokens.

Getting tokens

How do a subscription’s tokens work?

Each week, Curious or Curiouser refills its tokens and last week’s unused ones expire. They’re spent before any others. A trial’s tokens expire when it ends.

What if a world I created has major issues?

We try to give you a high-quality world for every description, but mistakes can happen. If a world doesn’t meet your expectations, open its details and choose Request a refund….

How do I get my money back for a purchase?

Apple refunds App Store purchases: ask at reportaproblem.apple.com. A refund takes back the tokens it paid for that you haven’t used, including any a world made before the refund gives back later.

What about a new device?

Your tokens and subscription come with your Apple Account. If they don’t show up, tap Restore purchases on the Raree page.

How do I cancel a subscription?

In Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions. The tokens you bought stay yours.

Settings and help

Settings

Tap ••• at the top right to open the Raree page, where these settings are. On Apple Vision Pro, use the gear beside Create.

Mix with reality

Choose how much of what’s around you mixes with the world.

  • Off. Disables all mix with reality effects.
  • People. People show in front of the portal and in the world.
  • In Front. Like People but any real object in front of the portal hides it too.
  • Immersive. Experimental. The portal world blends fully with what’s around you.

The available levels depend on your device. On iPhone, In Front and Immersive need LiDAR.

Portal style

Choose Rift or Soft on the Raree page. Immersive uses the Soft style.

Sound

All sounds turns every sound on or off. Portal sound effects controls the portal’s own sounds. The volume is beside them on the Raree page.

World Effects

Tap a world’s name to open its Info, which has a switch for each of these it has.

  • World effects. Its own motion, light and particles.
  • Portal effects. What’s on the portal’s glass, like drops running down it or frost.
  • Sound. Its soundscape, for this world alone.

Common problems

The placement mark won’t turn blue

The camera needs light and some texture for augmented reality: plain white walls and shiny floors are hard. Move the device slowly side to side, about 1.5 meters (5 feet) away.

Or tap while the mark is orange to open the portal just ahead.

The portal moved or disappeared

Look around slowly where the portal was and it finds its way back. Or close the portal and place it again.

It asks for the camera

Raree needs the camera to place a portal. Tap Open Settings and turn on Camera, or find Raree under Apps in the Settings app. Until then, View in 2D instead shows worlds on the screen.

The world looks broken at the edges

A world is made to be seen from in front of the portal. Step back so you look in from the front, not far off to one side.

There’s no sound

Turn off Silent mode. Then check All sounds on the Raree page, and Sound in the world’s Info.

On Apple Vision Pro, also check the volume in Control Center.

It says it can’t reach Raree

Making worlds, opening links and first opening a world that comes with Raree need the internet. Worlds in your library open without it.

My world wasn’t made

If creation failed, your tokens will be returned automatically. Tap Try again, or Edit to reword it first.
